Squarespace to Webflow migration with every URL accounted for

We move Squarespace sites to Webflow as a planned rebuild that covers the content Squarespace lets out, the parts it keeps in and every URL that earns traffic. Each old address keeps working or gets a 301 to its closest new page, and we confirm SEO parity on staging before the domain moves.

Why teams move from Squarespace to Webflow

The usual trigger is content that has outgrown Squarespace's page types. Blog, portfolio, events and store pages suit a simple site, but they don't model relationships. Webflow's Premium plan holds 40 CMS Collections and 20,000 items with reference fields (Webflow's 2026 plans, as of October 2026), so a case study can point to its services and a post to its author.

Price is rarely the reason, because Webflow usually costs more. For a site with one blog and three people editing, Squarespace Core comes to USD 348 a year in the US, while Webflow Premium plus two Limited seats comes to USD 660, both billed yearly as of October 2026. We check that the gains below are the ones you need before we quote.

  • Related content: case studies tied to services, posts tied to authors and categories, offices tied to the people who work there
  • Layouts a designer controls at every breakpoint, with interactions, instead of template sections
  • SEO fields set once on a Collection template and filled per item, across hundreds of posts
  • A second blog, events or a portfolio that should share one content model with the main blog

Both are hosted builders, so the comparison comes down to structure, seats and what can leave with you later. Figures are US prices before tax, billed yearly, as of October 2026; Squarespace shows local prices outside the US, so check yours at checkout.

What comes across from Squarespace, and what stays behind

Squarespace's export is a WordPress-format XML file. It carries layout pages, gallery pages on version 7.0 and a single blog page with up to 1,000 comments per post. It leaves out album, index, portfolio, calendar and store pages, any second blog, drafts, style settings, custom CSS, and audio, video and product blocks, and a trial site can't be exported at all. Webflow's CMS imports CSV, not XML, so even the exported part is converted before it goes in.

The gaps have other routes. Squarespace documents a JSON view of any page, reached by adding ?format=json-pretty to its address, which returns each item's body, categories, tags, SEO data, full URL and image URLs. We use it for second blogs, events, portfolio projects and product images.

  • Products: a CSV of up to 10,000 products, without featured images, variant images, alt text or reviews
  • Member sites: members export to CSV from Lists & Segments, and ending the Digital Products plan removes access to that list
  • Orders, contacts and form entries: CSV exports from their panels, taken again on launch day
  • Images: no bulk export, and image links in the XML stop working once the Squarespace site is cancelled
  • Custom CSS and style settings: not in the export, so the styling is rebuilt in Webflow's Designer

How Squarespace content maps to Webflow

We design the Webflow Collections before importing anything, because a reference field finds its target by name or slug, which means categories and authors go in ahead of the posts that point to them. Each CSV file can be up to 4 MB, so a long blog with HTML bodies goes in several files. Building those Collections and their templates is the same Webflow development we do for new sites.

How we move a Squarespace site to Webflow

Our website migration process runs the same way every time: inventory, map, rehearse, switch, watch. On Squarespace the inventory starts from /sitemap.xml and a full year of Search Console pages and links, then adds the files under /s/ that other sites link to, because Squarespace's URL mappings don't cover image or file addresses. Every row gets a decision: keep, 301, merge or retire. The Squarespace to Webflow guide shows the same steps for teams doing it themselves.

While the site is still live we export the XML, products, orders, contacts, members, form entries and each collection's JSON, and download every image and file from Squarespace's CDN. Images are resized before import, because Webflow doesn't create responsive variants for images brought in through CSV. The site is built and filled on the webflow.io staging address, kept out of search, while Squarespace keeps serving visitors.

Our redirect map generator does the first pass by matching the Squarespace sitemap with the staging sitemap, and we finish the map by hand. The rules go into Webflow as one master CSV, since each import replaces every existing redirect. Dated post URLs collapse into a few pattern rules, special characters in old paths are escaped with %, and specific rules sit above broad ones, because Webflow tries older rules first.

Redirects must live in Webflow before the switch, because Squarespace's URL mappings only apply while the domain is connected to Squarespace. In a planned window we delete the Squarespace Defaults in the domain's DNS settings, add the A record and www CNAME from Webflow, publish, submit the sitemap and send real form entries. The domain itself can stay registered at Squarespace. Thirty and sixty days later we compare indexed pages and clicks per page with the numbers taken before launch, and you receive the Webflow site, the DNS records and the redirect list.

Checks before and after the switch

Each check runs on staging first and again on the live domain. The list below covers what is particular to Squarespace; our website migration SEO checklist has the general one.

  • Every old URL from the inventory requested: one 301 to a page that answers 200, or a deliberate 404 or 410
  • Category and tag URLs tested with their original capitals and + signs, since Squarespace treats them as case-sensitive
  • Dated post URLs, old ?category= links and /s/ files each tested against the rule written to catch them
  • Titles, meta descriptions and Open Graph images matched to the old pages, per static page and per Collection template
  • A self-referencing canonical on every new URL, and hreflang on each locale if Webflow Localize is in scope
  • Structured data rebuilt in the templates and checked with Google's Rich Results Test
  • No image in rich text still loading from images.squarespace-cdn.com or static1.squarespace.com
  • Forms sent with real entries to the right inbox or CRM, and analytics firing only after consent
  • New sitemap submitted in Search Console, with 404s and clicks by page reviewed at 30 and 60 days
  • Squarespace cancelled only after those reviews, since a cancelled site stops being indexed and its images stop loading

When staying on Squarespace makes more sense

A move to Webflow is a rebuild, and some sites lose more than they gain. When a site matches one of these cases, we say so in our first reply. Our guide to Webflow alternatives compares Squarespace, Webflow, Framer and others for the same site.

  • The store is the business: Webflow Ecommerce Standard allows 500 items, so a large catalog is better on Squarespace or Shopify
  • Appointments, courses or a member area carry revenue, and Webflow offers neither booking nor built-in logins
  • Many people edit: Squarespace Core has unlimited contributors, while each Webflow editor needs a paid seat
  • One blog, a few pages and one or two editors: either platform works, and Squarespace costs less
  • Speed is the only complaint: in Google's field data for September 2026, 82.9% of US Squarespace sites passed Core Web Vitals on mobile, against 80.2% of Webflow sites

If the problem is search visibility rather than the platform, SEO work on the current Squarespace site may be enough. Teams on other platforms can compare our Wix to Webflow and WordPress to Webflow migrations.

What Webflow costs to run, and what sets the quote

For a content site, Webflow's 2026 choice is Basic or Premium, and Webflow bills each editor as a seat. The prices below are US dollars per site, before tax, as of October 2026. Our Webflow pricing calculator prices your site with seats, locales and bandwidth, and Webflow pricing in 2026 explains the change.

We don't publish a migration price. Each Squarespace move is quoted from its URL inventory, and the drivers are the number of URLs and templates, how many collections sit outside the XML export, store and member data, integrations and languages. Other providers' published prices, by platform and site size, are collected in our website migration cost guide.

Questions before you choose

Will we lose Google rankings when we move from Squarespace to Webflow?

Some movement is normal. Google's site-move guidance warns that rankings fluctuate while Google recrawls the pages, and for a small to medium site that settling takes a few weeks. Lasting losses come from URLs that stop answering, so every Squarespace URL with clicks or links gets a 301 to its closest Webflow page. Nobody can guarantee rankings, but you see the baseline, the map and the comparison at 30 and 60 days.

Can Webflow import a Squarespace site automatically?

No. Webflow's own migration guide says a Squarespace site can't be converted into a Webflow site automatically. The design is rebuilt in Webflow, and the content goes into CMS Collections as CSV files we build from three sources: the XML export, the product file and the JSON behind each collection.

Can we keep our Squarespace blog URLs?

Often, yes. Posts with title-only addresses such as /blog/my-post keep them when the Webflow Collection URL is blog and the slugs match. Posts with dates in the address get pattern rules that send them to the same slug without the date, and category and tag pages with traffic get 1:1 rules.

What happens to our Squarespace store and member area?

Products export as CSV, up to 10,000, but without images, so we add image URLs from the JSON before Webflow's product import. Webflow Ecommerce Standard holds 500 items. Webflow has had no member logins since it retired User Accounts in January 2026, so members are exported as CSV for a separate tool. If the store or the member area earns most of the revenue, staying may be the better call.

How long does a Squarespace to Webflow migration take?

The URL count sets most of it, followed by the collections the XML leaves out, the store, the integrations and the pace of approvals. Search takes its own time after launch: Google's guidance gives most pages of a small or medium site a few weeks to settle, which is why the project closes with the 60-day review.

Can our team still publish after the move?

Yes. Each editor gets a Webflow Limited seat, USD 15 a month billed yearly as of October 2026, to edit CMS content. We set Collections up so titles, summaries, categories and SEO fields are separate fields, and we check editor roles before launch so the team can publish the day after.

What happens to the Squarespace site and our domain?

Squarespace keeps serving visitors until the switch, and we cancel it only after the post-launch reviews. The domain can stay registered at Squarespace and point to Webflow. Cancelling puts the site behind a Website expired notice, takes it out of search and breaks its Squarespace-hosted images; the domain subscription is separate and renews until you transfer it.

How much does a Squarespace to Webflow migration cost?

We quote each move from its URL inventory, not a price list. The URL and template count, collections outside the XML export, store and member data, integrations and languages set the scope. The Webflow plan is a separate line: Premium is USD 25 a month billed yearly as of October 2026, plus USD 15 a month for each editor seat.
