Squarespace to Webflow: how to move your site, content and domain without losing SEO

Squarespace exports one blog and your layout pages, not images or store pages. How to rebuild in Webflow, redirect every URL and move the domain.

The short answer

There's no converter from Squarespace to Webflow. Webflow's own guide says "there's no automated way to convert a Squarespace site into a Webflow site" (Webflow Help), so moving from Squarespace to Webflow is a rebuild: you design the pages again in Webflow and import the content into CMS Collections by CSV.

Squarespace's export won't carry it all. It produces a WordPress-format XML file with your layout pages and one blog, and leaves out store, portfolio, events and other page types, video and product blocks, drafts and custom CSS (Squarespace Help). Images can't be exported in bulk, and image links in the export "stop working after you cancel your Squarespace site". Collect everything while the site is live.

To keep rankings, add a Webflow 301 redirect for every Squarespace URL that changes, before you point the domain at Webflow: Squarespace's URL mappings only work while the domain is connected to Squarespace.

On price, Webflow is not the cheaper option. A site with one blog and three editors costs USD 348 a year on Squarespace Core and USD 660 on Webflow Premium with two editor seats, billed yearly. Move for design control and a structured CMS, not for the bill.

Prices are in US dollars, before tax, as published on 17 October 2026 (Squarespace's US prices from the Internet Archive's capture of 13 October 2026, because its pricing page shows local prices).

Is Webflow better than Squarespace for your site?

It depends on what the site has to do. A move pays off in some cases and not in others:

Your situationBetter on
Custom layouts, interactions and a designer who wants control of every breakpointWebflow
Several related content types: case studies linked to services, authors, locationsWebflow: 40 Collections and 20,000 items on Premium, with reference fields
A small site with a blog that one or two people editEither; Squarespace costs less

A store with hundreds of productsSquarespace, or Shopify; Webflow Ecommerce Standard allows 500 items
Appointments, member areas or coursesSquarespace: Webflow's plans list no appointment booking, and Webflow retired User Accounts on 29 January 2026

If two or more rows point to Squarespace, think twice. Webflow's strengths are design freedom, a real content model and per-template SEO control; Squarespace's are an all-in-one toolset at a lower price for small teams. Our Webflow alternatives guide compares both with Framer, WordPress and Wix Studio for the same site.

The worked example: a 25-page services site with a 150-post blog, edited by the owner and two colleagues, billed yearly.

  • Squarespace Core: USD 29 × 12 = USD 348 a year, USD 1,044 over three years.
  • Webflow Premium plus two Limited seats: (USD 25 + 15 + 15) × 12 = USD 660 a year, USD 1,980 over three years.
  • Framer Pro plus two content editors: (USD 30 + 10 + 10) × 12 = USD 600 a year, USD 1,800 over three years.

Add the move itself: DesignSense Agency, for example, publishes Squarespace, Wix and WordPress rebuilds in Webflow or Framer from USD 800 in about two weeks (Contra), and our website migration cost guide lists more providers by site size. Webflow's 2026 plan changes are behind those Premium numbers; our Webflow pricing 2026 guide explains them, and the Webflow renewal calculator prices your own site with seats, locales and bandwidth.

Framer as the alternative

Framer is the closer swap if the site is mostly designed pages, the team is small and nobody needs related collections. Two limits matter for a Squarespace move: redirects are on Pro, not Basic, and Pro includes 2,500 CMS items (Framer pricing). Framer's redirect rules use * wildcards and :1 placeholders (Framer Help), and a CSV import updates matching rules instead of replacing all of them (Framer Help). Our Framer pricing 2026 guide lists every plan and add-on, and Webflow vs Framer compares the two for the same site.

What Squarespace exports, and what it keeps

Sources: Squarespace Help: Export your site content, Import to and export from your site, Image and file URLs.

Two more catches: you "can't export from a trial site", and a form without a required email field "stores each submission for 30 days" only. Export submissions now if your forms are set up that way.

The JSON route for everything the XML skips

Squarespace's developer documentation describes a cleaner source: "Append ?format=json-pretty to the URL of any page on your Squarespace site and you'll be able to view the JSON data" (Squarespace Developers). On a blog, each item carries its body (HTML), categories, tags, seoData, fullUrl, publication date and assetUrl, and a pagination block points to the next page of results.

https://www.example.com/blog?format=json-pretty
https://www.example.com/events?format=json-pretty
https://www.example.com/shop?format=json-pretty

That gets you second blogs, events, portfolio projects and products with their image URLs, all things the XML leaves out. A short script turns the JSON into one CSV per Webflow Collection. Use fullUrl to set each item's Webflow slug, so most URLs stay the same.

Save the images before you cancel

Squarespace serves images from its own CDN, at addresses that begin with images.squarespace-cdn.com, static.squarespace.com or static1.squarespace.com (Squarespace Help). The sitemap lists the images of each page, and the JSON gives each item's assetUrl, so a script can download them all while the site is live.

Webflow's CSV import fetches an image field from "a direct URL to an image" and stores it in Webflow, but those images "don't get responsive image variants (srcset and sizes)" (Webflow Help). So resize images before import, or upload the important ones in Webflow directly. Images inside rich-text bodies are HTML img tags: check after import that their src points to Webflow, and re-upload any that still point to Squarespace, because those break when the subscription ends.

Importing into the Webflow CMS

Build the Collections first (Blog Posts, Categories, Authors, Events, Projects), then import one CSV per Collection. The limits from Webflow's CSV import guide:

  • 4 MB per CSV file. A large blog with HTML bodies goes in several files.
  • Items per import depend on the plan: Premium holds 20,000 CMS items in total.
  • Name and slug under 256 characters. Rich text goes in as HTML, and Webflow "may clean up embeds".
  • Image fields take one URL; multi-image fields take URLs separated by semicolons. File fields can't be imported.
  • References match by the referenced item's name or custom slug, so import Categories and Authors before Posts.
  • A Collection's schema holds up to 60 fields (Webflow Developers), which is plenty for a blog.

Products are separate: Webflow's product import maps fields automatically, takes a 4 MB file, and downloads images from the URLs in the file (Webflow Help). Squarespace's product CSV has no images, so add the image URLs from the JSON before you import. Webflow then serves products at /product/{slug}.

Squarespace URLs and the Webflow redirects they need

We checked the URL patterns below against Squarespace's URL slugs documentation and the sitemaps of live Squarespace sites, including Squarespace's own template demos, on 17 October 2026.

Squarespace URLExampleWebflow rule
Post, date format/blog/2019/3/11/on-letting-go/blog/(.*)/(.*)/(.*)/(.*) to /blog/%4
Post, year format/blog/2026/my-post/blog/2026/(.*) to /blog/%1, one rule per year
Post, title only/blog/my-postNone, if the Collection URL is blog and slugs match
Category/blog/category/Wedding+Stories1:1, such as /blog/category/Wedding%+Stories to /category/wedding-stories
Tag/blog/tag/Wedding+Tips1:1 for tags with traffic; let the rest return 404
Older category links/blog?category=Travel/blog%?category%=Travel to /category/travel
Product/shop/p/cooper-sandal-g9mgl/shop/p/(.*) to /product/%1 if slugs are kept
Event/events/annual-plant-saleNone, if the Events Collection URL is events
Portfolio project/work/project-twoNone, if the Collection URL is work
Video page/videos/v/basic-flow1:1 to the new page
Uploaded file/s/brochure.pdf1:1 to the file's new page or asset

What makes those rules work in Webflow (Webflow Help):

  • Escape special characters in the old path. Webflow requires a % before % - & * ( ) = _ + ? in old paths, so a hyphenated slug like on-letting-go is written on%-letting%-go, and Wedding+Stories becomes Wedding%+Stories. Capture groups such as (.*) stay as they are. The new path needs no escaping.
  • Order matters. "Older redirects are tried first", so add specific rules before broad ones, such as the category rules before any rule with a capture group under /blog/.
  • Keep the case. Squarespace category and tag URLs are case-sensitive and use + for spaces (Squarespace Help). Copy them from the sitemap exactly.
  • A page that still exists can't be redirected. If a Webflow page lives at the old path, the redirect won't fire until the page is drafted, deleted or renamed.
  • Bulk import replaces everything. A CSV import can be up to 16 MB, and "new imports overwrite all existing redirects" (Webflow Help), so keep one master file and import it whole.
  • Stay near 1,000 rules. Webflow has no hard limit but recommends 1,000 at most, and each rule adds weight to a file browsers download. Pattern rules for dated posts keep the count down.

Files deserve their own line. On Squarespace, /s/brochure.pdf answers with a 302 to the CDN (we tested this on a live site), and Squarespace's URL mappings "can't redirect image or file URLs" (Squarespace Help). Search your Search Console links report for /s/ addresses that other sites link to, upload those files to Webflow and redirect each one.

Our redirect map generator reads the Squarespace sitemap and the Webflow staging sitemap, matches them and exports the rows as a CSV that Webflow's importer accepts.

The domain: point it or transfer it

Squarespace Domains also holds the domains that came from Google Domains: "On September 7, 2023, Squarespace acquired all domain registrations and their associated customer accounts from Google Domains" (Squarespace Help). Either way you have two routes.

Point it at Webflow and keep it at Squarespace. In DNS settings, delete the Squarespace Defaults ("Your domain can't point to another site when these defaults are in place"), then add the A record and the www CNAME that Webflow gives you (Squarespace Help). Webflow's Squarespace Domains page lists the values but says to copy them from your own site's publishing settings. Squarespace allows 24 to 48 hours for the change to spread. This is the quickest switch and you can undo it.

Transfer it to another registrar. Webflow isn't a registrar, so the domain goes somewhere else. Squarespace's steps (Squarespace Help):

  1. Remove DNSSEC if you added it.
  2. Screenshot your DNS records: "most domain hosts can't keep your settings in place during a transfer".
  3. In the domains dashboard, switch Domain Lock off and request the transfer code, which arrives by email within 24 hours.
  4. Start the transfer at the new registrar. It "can take up to 15 days".
  5. If you use Google Workspace, set its MX records at the new provider afterwards.

A domain can't move for 60 days after it's registered or transferred in, and a contact change can add a 60-day lock that "can't be disabled" (Squarespace Help). While it's locked, point it instead. And if the domain came free with an annual plan, "the free offer doesn't carry over".

Cancel Squarespace last

Cancel only after the Webflow site has been live for a few weeks and you've checked every redirect. Once cancelled, the site shows "Website expired", "becomes private and search engines stop indexing your content", and images hosted on Squarespace stop loading (Squarespace Help). The domain subscription stays active and keeps renewing until you move it.

Annual plans are refundable within 14 days of purchase; monthly plans and renewals aren't (Squarespace Help). If your renewal date is close, plan the launch around it.

Migration checklist

StepTaskDone when
1Download /sitemap.xml and Search Console's pages and links for 12 monthsEvery Squarespace URL with clicks or links is listed
2Export the XML, products, orders, contacts, formsFiles saved with the date
3Pull each collection's ?format=json-prettySecond blogs, events, projects and product images captured
4Download every image and fileNothing depends on Squarespace's CDN
5Build Collections, then import Categories, Authors, PostsItem counts match the source
6Rebuild pages, forms and analytics on the webflow.io staging siteQA passed on every breakpoint
7Set titles, descriptions and Open Graph per page and per Collection templateMatches the old pages
8Import the redirect CSV and test every rowEach old URL returns one 301 to a page that answers 200
9Point the domain; keep email recordsSite live on the domain; mail flowing
10Submit the sitemap; watch 404s and clicks by pageTop pages back at baseline after 30 to 60 days
11Cancel Squarespace; transfer the domain if you wantOnly after the checks above pass

Google's advice for the weeks after launch applies here too: visibility "may fluctuate temporarily", and redirects should stay "for as long as possible, generally at least 1 year" (Google Search Central). You keep the same domain, so the Change of Address tool doesn't apply. Our website migration SEO checklist covers launch day and the 90 days after, and if you're also weighing a Wix site, migrating from Wix follows the same steps with different URLs.

What to do next

Run your Squarespace sitemap through the redirect map generator to see how many URLs you're moving and which need a rule. If you want the move done for you, Dardo handles Webflow development and website migrations, with a redirect map for every URL.

Common questions

Can I import my Squarespace site into Webflow?

Not automatically. Webflow says there's no way to convert a Squarespace site, so you rebuild the design in Webflow and import the content into CMS Collections from CSV files. Squarespace's XML export, its product CSV and the JSON version of each page give you the content to convert.

Is Webflow better than Squarespace?

For custom design, interactions and structured content with related collections, usually yes. For a small business that wants appointment booking, member areas and many editors at a low price, Squarespace often fits better. Webflow also costs more once you add editor seats.

How do I move my Squarespace domain to Webflow?

Webflow isn't a registrar, so you either point the domain or transfer it to another registrar. To point it, delete the Squarespace Defaults in its DNS settings and add the A and CNAME records Webflow gives you. To transfer it, turn off Domain Lock, request the transfer code and start the transfer at the new registrar, which can take up to 15 days.

Will my Squarespace images keep working after I move?

Not for long. Squarespace serves images from its own CDN and says image links from the export stop working after you cancel the site. Download every image while the site is live and upload it to Webflow, either through the CSV import's image fields or directly in the Assets panel.

How many redirects can a Webflow site have?

Webflow has no hard limit but recommends 1,000 at most, because every rule is added to a file that browsers download. Pattern rules with capture groups, such as one rule for all dated blog URLs, keep the count low. A CSV import of redirects can be up to 16 MB and replaces every existing rule.

Does a Google Domains domain move the same way?

Yes. Squarespace took over all Google Domains registrations on 7 September 2023, so those domains are managed in Squarespace Domains and follow the same pointing and transfer steps as any other Squarespace domain.

When should I cancel my Squarespace subscription?

Only after the Webflow site has been live for a few weeks with every redirect tested and every image re-hosted. A cancelled site shows a Website expired message, stops being indexed and its images stop loading. The domain stays active and keeps renewing until you move it.
