How much does a website cost in the US in 2026? Published rates, platform fees and what moves a quote

What a website costs in the US in 2026, from published sources: builder plans, freelancer and agency rates, web app budgets and the costs that recur.

The short answer

A website in the US costs anything from about $120 a year on a builder you set up yourself to six figures for a custom web application. As of October 2026, standard plans on Framer, Webflow and Squarespace ran from $10 to $99 a month billed yearly. Upwork put the median freelance rate at $21 an hour for web designers and $30 for web developers, from contracts worldwide. Clutch put US web design firms at $100 to $149 an hour, with most web design projects reviewed on its platform under $10,000, and its reviewed software projects averaged $132,480.

Those numbers aren't noise. Each one prices a different amount of work done by a different kind of team. This guide puts the published figures side by side, dates each one, and shows how they turn into a quote. If you already know you want a custom site, our web design service explains how we scope one.

Where US website prices come from

We found no government or industry survey of what US websites cost. The data that does exist comes from three kinds of source, and each has limits:

  • Marketplaces publish rates from their own contracts. Upwork's rates come from historical contracts worldwide, so they mix US freelancers with freelancers everywhere else.
  • Review platforms publish what reviewed clients paid. Clutch compiles its pricing from verified client reviews of the agencies it lists, and it publishes averages and rate bands, not medians.
  • Government wage data shows what employers pay staff. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is the right comparison if you're weighing an in-house hire.

Most articles that quote an "average website cost" are written by agencies that sell websites, with no method behind the number. This guide only uses figures a source publishes about its own data or its own prices.

Two cautions about this table. First, Clutch's web design average of $38,105 sits next to its statement that most reviewed projects cost under $10,000, which means a minority of large projects pulls the mean up. Clutch doesn't publish a median, so don't anchor on the average. Second, Clutch's own pages disagree on US rates: its web design and web development guides list US firms at $100 to $149 an hour, while its software development guide lists them at $50 to $99. We show both rather than averaging them.

What a DIY website costs on a builder

On a builder, you pay a monthly plan and do the work yourself. These are the US prices on each platform's pricing page in October 2026:

PlatformPlanPrice a monthNotes
FramerBasic / Pro$10 / $30, billed yearlyExtra editors $20 a month each; domain included on yearly plans
WebflowBasic / Premium$15 / $25, billed yearlyBasic has no CMS; Premium adds the Webflow CMS
SquarespaceBasic / Core$19 / $29 billed yearly, $25 / $39 monthlyBasic adds a 2% fee on online sales
ShopifyBasic / Grow$29 / $89 billed yearly, $39 / $105 monthlyCard rates on Basic from 2.9% plus 30 cents

The plan is the smallest part of the cost. A builder gives you hosting, templates and an editor; it doesn't give you the copy, the photography, the page structure or the hours to put them together. If you pay someone to do that work on a builder, Clutch lists $25 to $49 an hour for agencies working on platforms such as Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, Webflow and Shopify, well below its general US band.

A builder is also a platform choice you live with. Squarespace and Webflow host what you build, so leaving later usually means rebuilding. Our comparison of Webflow and Framer covers that trade-off for marketing sites.

Freelancer, studio or agency: the hourly math

Every custom quote is hours multiplied by a rate, whether or not the quote shows them. Upwork's own guidance is that a design project runs from about 10 hours for a very small one to several dozen hours for a large custom design with several rounds of revisions. Here is what the same 100 hours costs at each published rate:

  • At Upwork's $21 median for web designers: $2,100.
  • At Upwork's $30 median for web developers: $3,000.
  • At Upwork's expert band for web developers, $50 to $200 an hour: $5,000 to $20,000.
  • At Clutch's US band for web design firms, $100 to $149 an hour: $10,000 to $14,900.

That's why two quotes for "the same site" can differ by five times or more. Part of the gap is the rate. The rest is who estimates the hours, who carries the project management, and what happens when someone gets sick or a deadline moves. Our guide to choosing between a freelancer and an agency goes through who carries which risk.

Location moves the rate too. Clutch lists web design firms in Mexico and Spain at $25 to $49 an hour. A nearshore studio in a US-friendly time zone is one more option to compare, and our page on working with a studio in Colombia explains how that works in practice.

What an in-house web team costs

An in-house hire costs a salary plus benefits, every month, whether or not there's a project. The BLS reports median pay in May 2025 of $92,650 a year for web developers and $104,000 for web and digital interface designers.

Benefits come on top. In June 2026, benefits made up 30.0% of employer compensation costs in private industry, and wages the other 70.0% (BLS, Employer Costs for Employee Compensation). If a hire followed that average, a $92,650 salary implies about $132,000 a year in total employer cost, and a $104,000 salary about $149,000, before recruiting, equipment and software. That's our arithmetic on two averages, not a published figure. A hire pays off when the site and the product generate design and development work every week; for a single project, it rarely does.

Recurring costs after launch

The build is a one-time cost; these come back every month or year. Prices are from US pricing pages checked in October 2026:

CostPublished priceWhat to watch
.com domainNamecheap: $10.98 the first year, $18.48 to renew, plus a $0.20 ICANN feeFirst-year prices are promotions
Domain bundled with a builderSquarespace annual plans and Framer yearly plans include a domain for the first yearYou pay for it from year two
Hosting for a static or custom siteCloudflare Workers: free plan; paid plan from $5 a month; static asset requests freeUsage above the plan is billed
Editor seatsWebflow: $39 a month per full seat, $15 per limited seat, billed yearly; Framer: $20 per extra editor, $10 per content editorGrows with your team
LanguagesWebflow Localize from $9 a month; Framer $20 per localeTranslation and review are extra work
MaintenanceDardo: from $79 a monthCompare what each plan covers

Two things stand out. Renewal prices are where cheap first years catch up: the same Namecheap .com that costs $10.98 to register costs $18.48 to renew. And for a team, seats can cost more than hosting. Three extra full seats on Webflow cost $1,404 a year at $39 each, against $300 a year for the Premium site plan. On a site that serves static pages from Cloudflare, as dardo.studio does, static asset requests are free, so hosting can be close to zero and the recurring cost moves to the CMS and maintenance.

What moves a quote

The page count moves a quote less than most buyers expect; the scope behind the pages moves it more. The factors that add the most hours on US projects:

Changing a site you already have adds its own costs (a URL inventory, redirects, SEO checks); our guides to website redesign cost and website migration cost price that work.

  • Unique templates. Five pages with five original layouts can take more design than thirty pages built from three templates.
  • Content. If your team supplies final copy and images, the quote shrinks. If the studio writes it, website copywriting is a line of its own.
  • Accessibility. Designing and testing to WCAG 2.2 AA adds hours, and in the US accessibility is also a legal question under the ADA. Our guide to ADA website compliance explains what the law asks.
  • A Spanish version. Selling to Spanish-speaking customers in the US means a second set of pages, URLs and reviews; see multilingual websites.
  • Integrations. A form that emails one inbox is quick. A CRM, scheduling, payments or data from another system each add build and testing time.
  • Migration. An existing site that ranks needs its URLs, redirects and content carried over; that's a website migration inside the project.
  • Logged-in features. Accounts, dashboards and permissions turn a website into a web app, and it's priced like software.

How to compare website quotes

Give every provider the same brief, then compare the assumptions, not just the totals:

  • Ask for the hours and the rate behind a fixed fee, or at least the assumptions it rests on.
  • Ask for one-time and recurring costs on separate lines, with first-year and renewal prices for anything bundled.
  • Ask who owns the domain, the hosting account, the code and the design files at the end, and get it in the contract.
  • Ask how many rounds of changes are included and what a change outside scope costs.
  • Ask what happens after launch: bug fixes, updates, response times and the monthly price, if any.
  • Look at live sites the provider built, on your phone, before you sign.

Our guide on how to compare web design studios has a scoring sheet for that last step. If you're comparing prices in Colombia instead, our Colombia website cost guide does the same exercise with Bogotá providers and peso fees.

What Dardo charges

We publish our recurring prices on our pricing page: website maintenance from USD 79 a month, monthly SEO with reporting from USD 299 a month, and accessibility or AI visibility audits from USD 690 each. Projects such as web design and web development are quoted after a short review of your brief, because the price follows the work rather than a page count.

Our contact form offers budget ranges of under USD 5,000, 5,000 to 15,000, 15,000 to 30,000, 30,000 to 60,000 and over 60,000. Picking one is optional, and it helps us propose a scope that fits. Every proposal separates discovery and design, development, content, third-party software and recurring costs, and states its assumptions and payment stages. After launch, website maintenance keeps the site updated for a fixed monthly price.

All prices in this guide are dated snapshots from each source's own page. Prices change and promotions end, so check them before you sign. If you want a number for your own project, send us your brief.

Common questions

How much does a small business website cost in the US?

It depends on who builds it. Doing it yourself on a builder costs the plan, from $10 to $99 a month billed yearly on Framer, Webflow and Squarespace in October 2026, plus your time. Clutch reports that most web design projects reviewed on its platform cost under $10,000, with US firms charging $100 to $149 an hour. A small site with a few unique layouts, your own copy and a contact form sits at the lower end; custom content, integrations and a second language move it up.

How much does a website cost per month?

The monthly cost is the platform or hosting, the domain, any editor seats and maintenance. In October 2026, Webflow's Premium site plan was $25 a month billed yearly and Squarespace Core $29. A static site on Cloudflare can cost little or nothing to host, since static asset requests are free. Editor seats often cost more than hosting: Webflow charged $39 a month per full seat, billed yearly. Maintenance is separate; Dardo's starts at $79 a month.

Is a freelancer cheaper than an agency?

Usually per hour, not always per project. Upwork's median for web designers is $21 an hour, from contracts worldwide, while Clutch lists US web design firms at $100 to $149. But the total also depends on how many hours each one estimates, who manages the project, and what happens if the one person you hired becomes unavailable. Compare the hours, the assumptions and what's included after launch, not just the rate.

How much does a custom web app cost?

More than a website, because it's software. Clutch's software development guide, updated in September 2026, puts the average reviewed project at $132,480, with a typical range of $10,000 to $49,999 and a timeline of about 13 months. The average is pulled up by large projects. Accounts, dashboards, permissions, payments and data from other systems are what drive the cost, so a narrow first version with one core workflow keeps it down.

Why do website quotes vary so much?

Because they price different hours at different rates. The same 100 hours costs $2,100 at Upwork's median design rate and $10,000 to $14,900 at Clutch's US agency band. On top of that, providers estimate different scopes: one quote may include copywriting, accessibility testing, a Spanish version or a migration, and another may not. Give every provider the same brief and ask for the assumptions behind each number.

Does Dardo publish its prices?

Yes, for recurring work: website maintenance from USD 79 a month, monthly SEO with reporting from USD 299 a month, and accessibility or AI visibility audits from USD 690. Website and web app projects are quoted after a short review of the brief. The contact form offers optional budget ranges from under USD 5,000 to over USD 60,000, and every proposal lists one-time and recurring costs separately.
