The short answer
Choose Wix if you want a site you never have to maintain: hosting, security and updates are included, its sites pass Google's Core Web Vitals more often than WordPress sites do, and a small business site costs USD 612 to 1,044 over three years on the Light or Core plan. Choose WordPress if you need to own and move the site, control every SEO detail, or build something Wix doesn't do. It's the cheapest option on paper (about USD 300 over three years for hosting and a premium theme), but once you pay someone to keep it updated it costs more than Wix.
The deciding question is rarely price. It's who will look after the site in year two, and whether you might ever need to take it somewhere else. Prices below were read on 21 October 2026 from each vendor's own page, in US dollars before tax.
First, which WordPress?
"WordPress" means two different things:
- WordPress.org is free software you install on hosting you rent. You own the files and the database, and you're responsible for updates, backups and security. This is what most comparisons, including this one, mean by WordPress.
- WordPress.com is a hosted service, closer to Wix: plans include hosting, and its pricing page says plugin installation is available on every paid plan.
Self-hosted WordPress gives you the most control and the most chores. WordPress.com sits in between, and it's worth a look if you like WordPress's editor but not its maintenance.
What each costs over three years
Take a typical small-business site: about ten pages, a blog, a contact form, one or two people editing, nothing sold online. These are platform and software costs only, billed yearly. The domain is left out because it costs the same either way, and both Wix's yearly plans and our WordPress host include the first year free.
| Line item | Wix Light | Wix Core | WordPress, you maintain it | WordPress with a care plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plan or hosting | USD 17 a month: 612 | USD 29 a month: 1,044 | Hostinger Premium, 48 months prepaid: 119.52 | Same: 119.52 |
| Theme | Included | Included | GeneratePress Premium, USD 59 a year: 177 | Same: 177 |
| Updates, backups, security | Run by Wix | Run by Wix | Your own time | GoWP Pro, USD 39 a month: 1,404 |
| Three-year total | USD 612 | USD 1,044 | USD 297 plus your time | USD 1,701 |
Sources: Wix plans, Hostinger WordPress hosting, GeneratePress pricing and GoWP pricing, read on 21 October 2026.
How the lines add up: Wix Light is USD 17 × 36 months; Core is USD 29 × 36. Hostinger's Premium plan was on offer at USD 2.49 a month for a 48-month term, paid upfront as USD 119.52, so one payment covers the whole three years; it then renews at USD 10.99 a month. GeneratePress Premium is USD 59 × 3. GoWP Pro is USD 39 × 36 and covers automatic updates with visual checks, daily backups kept 90 days and daily security scans and cleanup.
Three things this table hides:
- Wix's prices depend on where you are. Its plans page shows "USD prices displayed for reference only" and says prices and currency vary by location; its help center says the same. On 21 October our connection was in Canada, and the same plans were offered in Canadian dollars at different amounts. Check the price at checkout before you compare.
- Light has no online payments. Wix lists "Accept payments" from Core up, so a site that takes bookings or deposits starts at USD 29 a month.
- Cheap WordPress hosting renews higher. Introductory hosting prices are for the first term. Budget for the renewal (here, USD 10.99 a month from year five), and for a better host if the site grows.
A care plan isn't the only way to maintain WordPress, but somebody has to do the job: our guide to website maintenance costs compares published care plans from USD 39 to several hundred dollars a month. If you'd rather start from your own scope, our website cost calculator prices a build from published figures.
Who owns the site, and what you can take with you
This is the biggest structural difference, and it matters most the day you want to leave.
On Wix, your content belongs to you, but the site can't leave Wix's servers. Wix's help center explains that a Wix site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers", because it runs on Wix's proprietary technology; only the domain can move. What you can export is partial:
| Data | Wix | WordPress |
|---|---|---|
| Pages and design | Not exportable | Theme files and database, from your host |
| Blog posts | "Currently, it is not possible to export blog posts" (Wix Help) | Included in the WXR export file |
| Products | CSV, up to 5,000 rows per file; digital products not supported (Wix Help) | WooCommerce's built-in product CSV exporter |
| Contacts | CSV, up to 50,000 at once, site owner only (Wix Help) | Users included in the export file |
| Code license | Proprietary | GPLv2 or later (WordPress.org) |
WordPress's Tools > Export screen produces one XML file with posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, custom taxonomies and users, which another WordPress site can import. Your host can also hand you the full files and database.
If you're already on Wix and thinking of leaving, our guide to migrating from Wix covers what to rebuild and which URLs to redirect.
SEO: what each lets you control
Both platforms can rank. The difference is how much of the technical setup you can change when you need to.
Wix covers the basics, with limits written into its own documentation:
- Robots.txt is editable, flagged by Wix as an advanced feature its support team can't help with.
- Structured data can be added as JSON-LD to static pages, under 7,000 characters per markup, but not to dynamic pages.
- URL structure has fixed parts: blog posts always sit under a prefix you can rename but not remove, and the blog and post prefixes can't share a name.
- Redirects are capped at 5,000 per site, work only with a custom domain, and can't start from the homepage.
WordPress lets you set any permalink structure, and plugins or your developer can add any schema, redirect or header you need. That freedom is also the risk: every SEO feature you add is another plugin to update. For most small sites, Wix's limits never bite. They bite when you're moving a large site with its own URL patterns into Wix, or when you need schema on hundreds of dynamic pages.
Speed: what real visitors experience
The HTTP Archive's technology report publishes, every month, how many sites on each platform pass Google's Core Web Vitals for real Chrome users. In September 2026, the latest month available on 21 October, Wix led WordPress in every market we checked:
| Market, mobile | Wix sites passing | WordPress sites passing | Wix sites measured | WordPress sites measured |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 88.7% | 62.0% | 37,229 | 352,468 |
| Mexico | 67.3% | 31.6% | 4,449 | 59,249 |
| Brazil | 67.3% | 32.8% | 13,352 | 136,052 |
| Colombia | 65.7% | 24.7% | 1,956 | 38,729 |
| All countries | 80.9% | 48.3% | 177,709 | 2,658,175 |

Read it as the average site, not your site. WordPress's number includes millions of sites on cheap shared hosting with heavy themes and plugins nobody has reviewed; Wix controls its own hosting and front-end code, so its floor is higher. A well-built WordPress site on good hosting can pass easily. A Wix site can fail too: in the same month's page weight data, the median Wix page loaded about 1.7 MB of JavaScript on mobile in the US, against about 0.9 MB for WordPress. Our website platform speed report shows the latest month for more platforms and countries.
Editing and teamwork
Wix's editor is visual: you drag elements onto the page and see the result immediately. Its newer Wix Harmony builder, as Wix describes it on its home page, lets you "flow between instant generation and hand-crafted design". Collaborators are limited by plan: 2 on Light, 5 on Core and 10 on Business, according to the plans page.
WordPress's block editor is built around content: pages are stacks of blocks, posts have authors, categories and revisions. It has six pre-defined roles, from Administrator to Subscriber, and no per-user fees, which suits a blog with several writers. Its design freedom depends on the theme: a well-made theme gives editors safe patterns, a page builder gives them freedom to break the layout.
Selling online
Both can run a store. On Wix, payments start with the Core plan, and Wix Payments in the US charges 2.9% + USD 0.30 per card transaction (3.7% + USD 0.30 for American Express). On WordPress you add WooCommerce, which is free; WooPayments in the US also charges 2.90% + USD 0.30 for cards. Card fees are a wash. The difference is the platform around them: Wix includes the store in the plan, while WooCommerce needs hosting that can handle checkouts and extensions for anything beyond the basics.
For a store where selling is the main job, compare dedicated platforms first. Our guides to ecommerce website costs and Shopify vs WooCommerce do that with three-year totals.
Security and upkeep
On Wix, security and platform updates are Wix's job. On WordPress, they're yours. Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026 counted 11,334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025, 42% more than in 2024; 91% were in plugins, 9% in themes, and only 6 in WordPress core. The practical rule: fewer plugins, chosen for active maintenance, updated every week, with backups you've actually restored once.
Which one fits
| Your situation | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Owner-run service business, few pages, nobody technical | Wix | Nothing to maintain; Light or Core covers it |
| You want the lowest cost and can handle updates yourself | WordPress | About USD 300 over three years |
| Content-heavy site, many authors, hundreds of posts | WordPress | Roles, no seat fees, full export |
| You may sell the business or switch agencies | WordPress | You own files, database and code |
| Bookings and simple payments built in | Wix (Core or Business) | Included in the plan |
| Specific SEO needs: custom URL patterns, schema at scale | WordPress | No fixed prefixes or markup limits |
| A design-led marketing site edited by a team | Neither, often | Look at Wix Studio vs Webflow or Webflow vs WordPress |
If you're switching
Moving from Wix to WordPress means rebuilding the pages and moving content by hand or through Wix's APIs, then redirecting every old URL that has visits or links. Moving from WordPress to Wix means fitting your URLs into Wix's fixed prefixes and its 5,000-redirect cap. Either way, plan the redirects before the design, and keep the old site reachable until they're tested.
What to do next
Write down who will edit the site and who will update it in year two; that answer usually decides between Wix and WordPress faster than any feature list. If you want Dardo to build the site or move it without losing rankings, see our web development and website migration services.
Common questions
Is Wix or WordPress cheaper?
Self-hosted WordPress is cheaper if you maintain it yourself: about USD 297 over three years for prepaid hosting and a premium theme, against USD 612 to 1,044 for Wix Light or Core. Paying a care plan to handle WordPress updates and backups, such as GoWP Pro at USD 39 a month, takes it to about USD 1,701, more than Wix.
Is Wix bad for SEO?
No. Wix sites can rank, and they pass Core Web Vitals more often than WordPress sites on average. Its limits are in the details: a blog post prefix you can rename but not remove, structured data only on static pages, and a cap of 5,000 redirects. They matter for large sites or migrations more than for a small business site.
Can I move my Wix site to WordPress later?
Yes, but not as an export. Wix sites must run on Wix's servers, so you rebuild the design in WordPress, move the content (blog posts can't be exported from Wix's dashboard) and redirect every old URL that has visits or links. Plan the redirects before you start the new design.
Is WordPress faster than Wix?
Not on average. In September 2026, 88.7% of US Wix sites passed Core Web Vitals on mobile against 62.0% of WordPress sites. That average includes many neglected WordPress sites on cheap hosting; a well-built WordPress site on good hosting can pass as easily as a Wix site.
Do Wix prices change by country?
Yes. Wix shows US dollar prices on its plans page for reference and says prices and currency vary by location, with the final price shown at checkout. Compare the price you see at checkout, before tax is added, with the WordPress costs for your market.
Should I choose WordPress.com instead of WordPress.org?
WordPress.com is a hosted service that handles hosting for you, closer to Wix, and its paid plans allow plugins. WordPress.org is the free software you install on your own hosting, with full control and full responsibility. If you like WordPress's editor but don't want to run your own hosting, WordPress.com is worth comparing.
