# 3D product configurator software vs a custom build: prices and when each fits

What 3D configurator apps cost in November 2026, what a custom build costs, and five signs your product has outgrown off-the-shelf software.

## Key takeaways

- Configurator software costs from about USD 29 to over USD 1,000 a month, and some platforms add a fee on each customized sale.
- Published estimates put a custom configurator at about USD 10,000 to 150,000, mostly in 3D models, rules and integrations.
- Software fits personalizable products and small catalogues; a custom build fits complex rules, many variants and sales through quotes.
- At 1.5% of sales, a million dollars a year in customized sales pays USD 15,000 in fees on Zakeke's Scale plan.
- Keep 3D models in glTF so they move with you if you change platforms.

## The short answer

There are two ways to put a 3D product configurator on your site: subscribe to configurator software, or have one built. Software is cheaper to start and fine for simple products. A custom build costs more up front and pays off when your options, prices or integrations don't fit a template. Every price below was read on the vendor's own pricing page on 8 November 2026.

- Personalizable products on Shopify, where buyers choose text, images or colours: start with an app. Zakeke costs USD 59 to 255 a month billed annually, plus 1.5% to 1.9% of each customized item sold.
- Furniture and other products with many variants, without a development team: platforms such as VividWorks (USD 547 to 1,047 a month) and Roomle (€100 to €1,450 a month, billed yearly) are built for it.
- Rules, prices or integrations no template handles: a custom build. Published estimates start around USD 10,000 to 25,000 and reach about USD 150,000 for complex products, with no fee per sale and no plan limits.

## What configurator software costs in 2026

Configurator platforms price by products, projects, 3D assets or views, and some take a share of each sale. This is what they publish:

| Platform | Published price | Limits and fees |
| ----------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Zakeke | USD 59, 110 or 255 a month billed annually (69.90, 129.90 or 299.90 month to month); Enterprise on request | 10, 50 or 100 products; 1.9%, 1.7% or 1.5% of each customized item sold |
| Angle 3D Configurator (Shopify app) | USD 39, 69, 99 or 199 a month | 10, 40, 100 or 500 products |
| Simplio3D | USD 29 or 49 a month; Enterprise on request | Starter: 20 projects and 100 model files; AR from the Pro plan |
| Vectary | Free, USD 25 or USD 250 a month; Business on request | 5, 25 or 250 projects; AR, WebXR and the Viewer API only on Business |
| VividWorks | USD 547 or 1,047 a month for the configurator; Enterprise on request | 100 or 1,000 3D assets; 60,000 or 120,000 views a year; setup scoped separately |
| Roomle | From €100 to €1,450 a month, billed yearly; Enterprise on request | 100,000 to 500,000 views a year; 10 to 20 configurators |
| Threekit, Expivi, Emersya, Cylindo | Quote only | No published plans |
| Shopify 3D models | Included in every plan | GLB or USDZ files up to 500 MB; shows a 3D model, but doesn't configure it |

Two things the plans don't show. Setup and 3D modelling are often extra: VividWorks scopes setup separately, and Simplio3D lists optional one-time setup fees. And the cheapest plans cap products, projects or views, so the price grows with your catalogue and your traffic.

## What a custom configurator costs

No independent survey of configurator budgets exists that we could find. What's published are estimates from companies that build them or sell software, so read each one with that in mind:

- Program-Ace, a 3D development company, says the minimum is usually USD 25,000, with complex projects reaching about USD 150,000.
- Twikit, a configurator vendor, puts adding a configurator at USD 10,000 to more than 100,000, plus USD 500 to 5,000 or more per configurator-ready 3D model variant, and setup and integration at USD 15,000 to 50,000.
- Elipse Studio, an agency, gives USD 8,000 to 20,000 for a simple configurator, 20,000 to 60,000 for a mid-size one and 60,000 to over 150,000 for a complex one.
- 3D Cloud, a furniture 3D vendor, says the 3D assets for one configurator average USD 3,000 to 10,000.

Most of that money goes into four things: the 3D models and finishes, the rules between the options, the integrations with your store, quotes or product data, and making it fast and usable on phones. Hosting a configurator is a small part, because it's a web page with compressed 3D files.

## SaaS or custom, side by side

| | Configurator software | Custom build |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Up-front cost | Low: a plan, sometimes a setup fee | USD 10,000 to 150,000 by published estimates |
| Running cost | A monthly plan, and on some platforms a share of each sale | Hosting and maintenance; no fee per sale |
| Rules and prices | What the platform's rule builder supports | Any rule your product has, and prices from your price book, ERP or CPQ |
| Integrations | The platform's connectors | Any system with an API: Shopify, headless commerce, CPQ, ERP or PIM |
| Design | Within the app's templates | Your brand's design, in your storefront |
| Ownership | Your models; the configurator runs on the vendor's platform | The models and the code are yours |
| Best for | Personalizable products, small catalogues, testing demand | Complex products, many variants, sales through quotes |

## Five signs you've outgrown configurator software

1. Your options depend on each other in ways the rule builder can't express: a width that limits the materials, a part that needs another part, options that change by market.
2. Your prices come from a formula, a price book or a CPQ system, not a surcharge per option.
3. Each configuration has to reach a quote, an ERP or the factory as a parts list or a product code.
4. The fees grow faster than the business. At Zakeke's Scale plan, USD 1 million a year in customized sales pays USD 15,000 in transaction fees on top of USD 3,060 for the plan, every year.
5. You need several storefronts or languages, or a design the template can't match.

One sign isn't enough to switch. Two or three usually are, because each workaround then costs time on every new product.

## A middle way: start on software, plan the move

If you're not sure buyers will use a configurator, test it on software first. Keep your 3D models in glTF, the open format most platforms read, so they move with you if you switch. If a custom build is the plan, start with one product family as a first slice: it proves the rules, the models and the integration before you commit to the whole catalogue.

Our [3D product configurator demo](https://dardo.studio/en/tools/3d-product-configurator-demo/) shows what a custom build can do on a fictional shelf: 960 versions, a parts list, a price that follows every choice, a .glb export and AR on Apple devices.

## Does 3D sell more?

Vendors publish their customers' results, and most of the evidence is theirs. The most cited academic study, by Tan, Chandukala and Reddy in the Journal of Marketing in 2022, used a cosmetics retailer's app data and found augmented reality use associated with higher sales for less popular brands, products with narrower appeal, pricier products and customers new to the channel. In other words, 3D and AR help most when buyers are unsure, which is often the case for configurable products.

## How to get a quote for a custom configurator

A useful quote needs the same few things from you, whoever builds it:

- The products and the options buyers choose, with the rules between them
- Where the prices come from: a list, a formula, a CPQ
- What 3D exists: CAD files, 3D files from renders, drawings, photos and samples
- Where each configuration has to go: cart, quote, ERP or factory
- Markets, languages and a launch date

Send that to us and we reply with the scope and price of a first slice. Our [3D product configurator service](https://dardo.studio/en/services/3d-product-configurator/) explains how we build them; for a complete store, see [e-commerce development](https://dardo.studio/en/services/web-development/), and for 3D that tells a story rather than configures a product, read [when a 3D website is worth it](https://dardo.studio/en/blog/3d-websites/).

## Common questions

**How much does 3D product configurator software cost?**

From free (Vectary's free plan) to over USD 1,000 a month. As of 8 November 2026, Zakeke costs USD 59 to 255 a month billed annually plus 1.5% to 1.9% per customized item sold, VividWorks USD 547 to 1,047 a month, and Roomle €100 to €1,450 a month billed yearly. Threekit, Expivi, Emersya and Cylindo quote on request.

**How much does a custom 3D configurator cost?**

Published estimates range from about USD 8,000 for a simple one to USD 150,000 or more for a complex one, plus USD 500 to 5,000 or more per 3D model variant by one vendor's count. The biggest variables are the number of 3D models, the rules between options and the integrations.

**Can I add a 3D configurator to Shopify?**

Yes. Apps such as Zakeke and Angle 3D Configurator install from the Shopify App Store, and Shopify shows 3D models on every plan. A custom configurator can also pass the chosen options to the cart as line item properties; a price that changes with them needs a variant per price or, on Shopify Plus, a Cart Transform function.

**Is a custom configurator cheaper in the long run?**

Sometimes. It has no fee per sale and no plan limits, so it gets cheaper as sales grow: at 1.5% of sales, USD 1 million a year in customized sales pays USD 15,000 in fees on Zakeke's Scale plan. For a small catalogue with modest sales, software stays cheaper.

**Do we keep our 3D models if we switch platforms?**

If they're in an open format like glTF, usually yes. Ask each vendor whether you can export the models and the configuration data, and keep your own master files, so a move doesn't mean modelling your catalogue again.
